A preliminary survey of the site, about 60 miles northwest of the modern city of Veracruz, has revealed the ruins of over 100 pyramids of land and stone and other structures, some reaching heights of 130 feet, which had long remained vegetation dense The central city and its suburbs extended over 40 square miles and were occupied by thousands, possibly more than 20,000 - large for that time and region.
In any case, the old city, called El Pital for a nearby town, is considered as one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the region of Veracruz in more than 200 years. The city is called 'Pivotal'.
For centuries the site of El Pital was obscured by the rainforest. The land was opened to agriculture in the 1930s and is now heavily planted in bananas and oranges. People who lived there and worked on the fruit plantations took the mounds for granted, assuming they were natural hills.
