Côte d'Azur "Nizza Morning"

Hello dear community,
On our penultimate day of vacation, we naturally visited the city right next to Villefranche-sur-Mer, namely beautiful Nice. After just one stop, we reached the impressive Nice train station. From there, we strolled through the streets lined with magnificent old buildings. Nice was not bombed during World War II, so you can still admire its splendor today.

A short time later, we reached Nice's famous waterfront promenade, the Promenade des Anglais. From here, we had an excellent view of the beautiful beach and saw some tourists hanging from parachutes being pulled across the sea by small motorboats. Not for me, I must admit :-)

The beach was still quite empty early in the morning, so we continued along the waterfront promenade. Here, we also passed a memorial dedicated to the victims of the Islamist terrorist attack on July 14, 2016, on the Promenade des Anglais. At that time, an attacker drove a truck into a crowd celebrating the national holiday. 86 people were killed and over 400 injured, some seriously. A very sad story.

As time passed, more people gathered on the promenade. Tourists, locals, joggers—everyone was there. From the promenade, we walked back toward the city center and came to a large square with an impressive fountain in the center. This was Place Masséna. The city's main square, so to speak, separating the old town from the new town. In the center of the square is the Fontaine du Soleil, the Sun Fountain, crowned by a 7-meter-high statue of the sun god Apollo. In addition to these features, the square is known for its red-painted facades, the black-and-white checkerboard pattern, and the sculptures by artist Jaume Plensa depicting the seven continents, perched on poles high above our heads.

From here, we visited the weekly market with its countless stalls where you could try everything. Meat, sausage, cheese, vegetables, and spices—everything was available and looked great. But then the sky darkened threateningly, and it became as dark as evening. We quickly set out to find suitable shelter from the thunderstorm that was sure to break out.
